Alun Mardon Memorial day a success.
The first Alun Mardon Memorial match was deservedly won by the visiting side made up of players from Cambrian, Ferndale, Glyncoch, Newbridge, Tylorstown and Wattstown, following the late withdrawal of original opponents Trefil. The match was a very enjoyable affair, with both sides entering into the spirit of the occasion and produced some high quality rugby in the process.
The opening period saw the home side have the better of the play, but were unable to convert their possession into points, but deservedly took the lead early in the second period when number 8 Brett o'Hagan crossed for a try after several phases of play. The best score of the game soon followed when centre Dai Gibbs cut a lovely angle from just inside his own half and outsprinted opposing fullback Julian Huntley to the tryline. Mike Tinson added the conversion and the home side seemed poised to pull away. However, with flanker Craig Waite replacing brother Lee in the visitors front row, and former 'town favourite Chris Gerry in irrepressible form, the tide turned distinctly in favour of the guest xv, who scored four unanswered tries for a well earned victory.
Club Chairman Mark Leyshon felt that the day had been a great success:"We felt that one of the best ways to remember Alun Mardon would be to play an annual game against Trefil, our opponents when Alun tragically died. Unfortunately, they were unable to raise a side and we are eternally grateful for all those players and coaches who turned up and gave of their services so willingly. Hopefully, we can continue to play against local sides for this trophy for future seasons and make this a match to bring down the curtain on our season."
